This is the official blog of ex-Sgt Ellie Bloggs. I was a real live police constable then sergeant for twelve years, on the real live front line of England. I'm now a real live non-police person. All the facts I recount are true, and are not secrets. If they don't want me blogging about it, they shouldn't do it. PS If you don't pay tax, you don't (or didn't) pay my salary.

Poor Codie.

The national press this week reported on the case of a 14yr old schoolgirl arrested for "racism" and kept in the cells for three-and-a-half hours. The story goes that poor Codie Stott was forced to study in a group with non-English speaking Asians and when she "politely" asked to switch groups, her teacher screamed at her, called the police and she was arrested for "racism". Poor Codie also had her jewellery (of which there was a lot) and shoelaces removed while in the cells.

As an experienced Detector of Crime, I identify the following clues as to the real turn of events:
  • The child is called "Codie" and her brother "Ashley".
  • She was told to sit with five Asian pupils.
  • The teacher screamed at her for no reason.
  • Codie went outside "to calm down" following the incident.
  • "Racism" on its own is not an offence.
My final clue is this picture:

The Chav Alert is ringing.

I suggest that what really happened was that dear Codie, hooped earrings and all, objected to having to sit with five Asians and lacked the "communication" skills to ask them to speak in English to her. When told she could not change groups, she disrupted the lesson by screaming racist abuse and stormed out. She was particularly upset at being kept in the cells for four hours as it meant she could not pick up her toddler from nursery.

It would also be interesting to hear young Codie interviewed on TV or radio. I would be willing to bet this year's pay rise that she has some strange combination of a Mancunian/Jamaican accent, innit?

Cos, like, that would prove that she is, like, a Chav, innit man?

I agree with Anonymous of 21.56. It is so easy to stereotype without the full facts that, without those facts, any comments made would simple identify the level of bigotry, racism or ignorance of those making the comments. I always thought that a Police officer should not draw a conclusion until all the available facts had been reviewed.
Codie could very well be a bling wearing chav of the hghest order. On the other hand the teacher could well have been a dungaree wearing, diversity leading, paranoid member of the Sisterhood.
Perhaps Bloggsy can enlighten us regarding that?

What kind of school needs a police officer stationed there full-time? I think that in itself speaks volumes...

From outside the UK it seems odd that a young child gets interogated by police in this manner especially for a political offence.
You seem to have a lot of spare police.
You seem to have a lot of police informers.

I disagree with anon 2215.
Police officers are regularly required to come to a conclusion without knowing the full facts. For example does someones suspicious conduct mean they are in possession of drugs or a weapon. The conclusion being they are stopping that person to find out what they have got.
Of course reasonable suspicion requires further investigation to establish what the facts are.
Bloggy might be right she might be wrong. I would not be surprised howver if there is more to it than a polite request to get moved to another discussion group. There is at least two sides to every story and we have only heard one so far.

Anon, 23:59 on 15th.

You are right that not many schools need a police officer per se. BUT they get them, in the same was as some hospitals and shopping centres do because the establishments pay for them.

Chief Constables being unable to look a gift horse in the mouth then duly 'buy one' with the additional funding. Thats how it works usually so if the school would rather spend money on police than educating then thats dissapointing.

What teachers should be in a position to do is to enforce a decent standard of discipline themselves without your 'below-average'pupil getting a 'sad on' about it. They just need support from the school SMT and the local education authority - .... oh hang on, there is a pattern developing here - sorry I slipped into an alternate society then!

Having read PC Bloggs for a while I'm fairly sure I'd not want to be looked at in the wrong way by PC Bloggs as she seems to readily draw conclusions based on nothing.

An outstanding example of a public servant believing itself being a public jury, judge and executioner.

You may well be right in inferring that young Codie is less than angelic, and probably less than PC (no pun intended) in her attitude and use of language.

But you ignore the key fact, not denied or refuted by the school, that she was placed into a discussion group of kids who couldn't speak English but did share a common language allowing them to function as group while excluding her. If that is what happened she was entirely right to challenge it.

What was the teacher thinking of? Did he/she perhaps have some kind of race agenda? Was he/she basically trying to wind Codie up, to artificially generate an "incident"?

Schools should employ security officers. This would largely obviate the need for any Police involvement, unless there was a real crime.

Birch 'em! make them serve 18 months or two years, whatever the sentence is on paper. No early release etc, chain gangs, forced labour etc. But also ensure that there is opportunity, jobs, a chance to have some pride, some self esteem, something to look forward to, National Service even, but for our citizens please. It's time to pull up the drawbridge and ensure access to opportunity. It'll take decades, but we have to start NOW! Otherwise the young underclass, taht will become the old underclass will always be there. Some of you holier than thou tw**s need to get a life and stop being so sanctimonius - YOU are part of the problem

I have an alternative suggestion.

White girl gets put into a group of Asians who couldn't speak English so teacher can write in her equivalent of a PDP that she is with-it on her diversity credentials.

Girl complains and teacher, who has had so many diversity courses she's forgotten common sense immediately shouts racism and brings it to head's attention.

Head, mindful of his own diversity targets lacks the common sense to deal with the matter in house as a petty 'disagreement' between children.

Police are called. Officer attends and mindful of their diversity training and stupid national crime recording standards is unwilling or unable to 'have a word' with all parties and leave it is a petty matter which should have been dealt with by the school.

Girls gets arrested, locked in a cell, branded as a criminal and sets her further down the path of disrespect for anyone in authority, particularly the police and that's another one lost who we'll have to pick up the pieces of for the next 30 years.

Everyone passes the buck up the line syaing they have no choice in the matter and nobody has the bottle to say, this is not a police matter, sort it out yourself right at the start.

OMG! Police officer in "shows tongue-in-cheek sense of humour" shocker!

PC Bloggs, I condemn you to go immediately and do the PoFace Course at Blandshire Training School (if it hasn't been Ipple-dipped alraedy!)

People, if you don't have a slightly twisted sense of humour you have no place in ANY of the blue-light services. The sooner you realise it, the sooner you will stop having unrealistic expectations of your ambulance EMTs, coppers and firefighters!

[not so much written tongue-in-cheek as tongue stuck firmly into bottom lip cavity whilst typing!!!!]

You are discriminating against the 'disadvantaged' by this "chav" term? Could it be take the teacher was "right on" and took offence to a reasonable request to leave? pcBloggs, you might be right but then you might be stereotyping.
