This is the official blog of ex-Sgt Ellie Bloggs. I was a real live police constable then sergeant for twelve years, on the real live front line of England. I'm now a real live non-police person. All the facts I recount are true, and are not secrets. If they don't want me blogging about it, they shouldn't do it. PS If you don't pay tax, you don't (or didn't) pay my salary.

Yet another police murder:

I am disgusted by this story of a woman who lay dead in a house for three years whilst the police failed to save her life and I fully agree with the IPCC who have said the police let down the family of the victim.

The family of poor Sally Shearing raised the alarm immediately they realised they had not heard from her for months. Clearly the police had utterly failed in their duty to phone and write to Sally's family on a regular basis, reminding them to visit and call her themselves.

It would be inconceivable that a worried relative should have to travel as far as Cornwall to check on the living status of someone dear to them, so at this point the police were dispatched. Can you believe it, the officer who attended failed to break into the house and naively believed the neighbour who thought the occupant lived in a home! It's almost as if the copper was completely oblivious to the fact that neighbours are known to be malevolent liars who want everyone around them to die.

The most shocking part of the case is that it was an INTRUDER who discovered the dead woman three years later. I do hope the police remembered to charge him and get the detection for burglary before thanking him for reporting the corpse.

I strongly recommend new legislation making it the police's job to force entry into the houses of anybody whose family hasn't visited for a while.

Det Sgt Tim Wright from Liskeard CID: "Obviously the time we took to find Sally's body is something we can't undo now.

"There were some opportunities lost, it's difficult to draw any conclusions on a wider basis, each case is always going to be individual.

"We'll clearly learn from these recommendations and our policies and procedures should be modified and reviewed in light of those recommendations."

What does this actually mean?

And 'learn from'? 'modified and reviewed'? What is he suggesting?

Please, Bloggs, no more legislation. Seems to me the family may have been giving consent for Police to break in and check her well being. They may even have saved a life?

But you're right - 3 years is a long time to find out what happened to your relative. Guess they took their holidays in Goa.

It means nothing, jobspeak for blame us for everything and we havn't the bottle to say ...

" this is not our fault"

.... we will issue a policy/ proceedure document which will not be straight forward and will include words such as consider/ risk assessment/dynamic/ supervisor/ community

rather than

" if you get called to a 'concern for welfare', you do not need to make any enquiries just force entry .... the service will support your action 100% and refuse to pay any subsequent claim for damages from the occupier and professional standards will refuse to take or record any complaint"

I think not

Bloggs, you got me there, initially I thought your being serious, then I realised it was you, therefore you cannot be serious.

As I read on, your ulterior sarcasm hit me in the face like a Tango advert. Even the neighbour thought the person was away? Away they were, with him upstairs!

Then I ended up laughing. Your sarcasm is unreal; no it's enigmatic. Did I really say enigmatic? I don't mind us getting some blame, but this was just well, the way it is.

In all thee years, 3 years, I take it the family could not be bothered to go all the way to Cornwall to check for themselves. I guess that was just too much to ask.

In the control room we take many 'concern for welfare calls'. The ones that go along the lnes of 'not seen for a couple of days, curtains still drawn, lights been on all night' there is never any doubt that a unit will be dispatched, blues and twos, to force entry if necessary and maybe save a life.
The ones that start 'I haven't heard from them for a few months, tried ringing yesterday and didn't get an answer' is a different matter.
If they are not prepared to go and check for themselves (some callers live in the same town!!) then I will ask if we can pass their number to a glazier so they can pay for boarding up. It's amazing how many people are no longer concerned for their friend/relative. We will of course still atttend, check hospitals etc, and if there is any sign of someone being inside force entry but only if there is an obvious sign.
I think the force did everything right up to the point that an apology was made.
Wy wasn't the 'grieving family' told to take responsibilty for their lack of action. Why were they not told that they should have got off their backsides and done something themselves instead of passing the buck?

What!? FAnilies taking responsibility for their loved ones? Pah!
Reminds me of the Climbie case. Child sent halfway across world to stay with Aunt who was barely known to the family but it's everyone elses fault that she came to harm.

Hang on though! I just twigged. (I'm on nights. Gerroff)
Didn't the family wonder which home she was in? Who had put her there? Who was paying the bill?
Once again we just roll over and go "Oh yeah, all our fault your estranged relly died alone. Here's a few grand to ease the pain and the officers head on a platter."

Bunch of arse.

I have been reading this blog for several months and it does appear to me that in the main, UK Police Administrators don't hesitate to "throw their line officers under the bus".

Do they think their journey to Knighthood is over the backs of their officers?

US Detective Sergeant, in a word, yes. Their road upwards involves the trampling of those below, not encouragins us, or valuing us, but taking our legs at every opportunity. PC's and Sergeants are the backbone of the service. We're also the fodder.

Didn't any of the neighbours notice such a thing as a foul smell?

Or did the natural smell of the neighbourhood mask this odour?

Being as we already bring up their children, tell their boyfriends/girfriends off for them, pick them off the floor when they are drunk etc etc etc I'm not surprised that we are now responsible for them when they are dead too.

Her body was found by an intruder.

A bloody intruder. Who visited three years later, before either her family or friends.

And the family have the cheek to say that the corpse of their neglected relative should have been discovered sooner.

The press should have set about this so called family like a pack of dogs.

Good book by the way. Shocking but good. Democratically elected CCs and Commissioners is the only solution, their current masters have been found wanting.

Now we're talking. I have said all along there is this master servant relationship. When they get to the level of yes sir, and are unable to think for themselves, but their worth is dictated by their desire to move further up, that's when they behave like servants.

Maybe it's time for nights to ensure that everyone on their patch is tucked in and for earlies to get them up.Obviously we can no longer expect people to take care of themselves or families to take any interest in each other.

There was a case reported last year where a husband had a fatal heart attack while fixing something behind some panelling in his house and was there for three years. You do have to wonder what the house must have smelt like normally given that nobody noticed.

as a Liskeard officer where Sally was found, what has not been said was the 3 years of Junk mail behind the door and the several final tax demands from the local council and the caring neighbours. we went once 3 years ago!

Like our lot, apologise first, suspend the people involved and then give the paperwork types a forest load of forms to fill in.

You are right that we need people in charge who have some balls.
